1920's - The Birth of Messers A. L. Simpkin & Co. Ltd

During 1914 to 1920 A. L. Simpkin was engaged in the war, when he was demobilised with the effects of severe wounds and the coveted honours of having been mentioned in despatches and awarded the Miltary Cross.  His promotion in the services enabled him to save the commencing capital to start a business.  He first became a retailer and wholesaler, then acquired a manufacturing confectionery business in Sedan Street, Sheffield.  At this point he ceased selling confectionery and masterminded his plan to produce products incorporating formulae with medicinal properties issued by his laboratory for sale soley for the UK Pharmacy and Chemist markets.

 

 

 1920's

The first Simpkins Products to be manufactured were Bulk jars of
 High Grade Glucose Confectionery and Cod Liver Oil Confections

Since 1921 - 2009, the travel tin packaging has changed a lot but theconfectionery is still manufactured to the same consistantly High Quality using only the finest ingredients available.  Thus ensuring that the Simpkins brand today is as true to its founders concept as it was then for the finest High Grade Glucose confections.

WW11 - During WW11 Simpkins produced their High Grade Glucose Sweets for all RAF personnel for use on High Altitude Sorties to alleivate the symptoms of altitude sickness and to help combat fatigue

 

 1950's-

Simpkins were proud to supply Hilary and Tenzing and their team with Simpkins High Glucose confectionery (Vita Glucose) on their successful 1953 Mission to conquer Mount Everest.

Hallams Travel Sweets - During the 1970's a company in Japan illegaly registered the Simpkins brand.  So until matters were resolved we traded under the Hallams brand.  The name Hallam comes from the Area of Sheffield that the Simpkin family grew up and still to this day reside.

 

World Cup 1974- Due to the qulaity and energy giving properties of their confections Simpkins were granted the exclusive selling rights in the Olympic village in Munich during the world cup of 1974.

Vacuum Packed Travel Sweets 

This process was ingenious and helped the confectionery to retain all the freshness and gave the Travel Sweets an indefinate shelf life.  Release the tab on the bottom of the tin (which allowed air in) and the tin would open.
